Free Money: Some Employees Steal From City ‘P’ Credit Cards, Spending $44,000 On Themselves

P cards were issued to most city employees. They are credit cards intended for staff to make legitimate city purchases for city supplies etc. Due to lax or non-existent oversight, a number of city employees instead used the cards to effectively steal money from taxpayers. Mayor Avula promised to reduce the number of cards and to manage them better – reportedly reducing the number of cards. How about eliminating them? Why were there no checks and balances in place?

As if ridiculous amounts of theft in the fire department aren’t enough, I read yesterday that the city is again asleep at the switch and has paid out retirement of $500,000 to DEAD FORMER EMPLOYEES.

This has gotten serious. Noone is apparently watching or auditing. Noone seems to care. And Avula has now been in office for 11 months. An excuse that he’s too new, no longer applies.

Agreed!

I agree that P cards should be eliminated. With this city’s record of lax or non-existent oversight, all should have known this was a really bad idea.
